1. Let m be the required number 20 – 2m = 42 20 – 2m = 16 2m = 4 m = 2 So, the number is 2. 2. Let the smallest number be x then the next consecutive number is x + 1 Then the largest is x + 2 So, x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 54 3x + 3 = 54 3x = 51 x = 17 So, the three numbers are 17, 18, 19 3. Let the smallest even number be 2n So, the consecutive even number is 2n + 2 And the largest is 2n + 4 So, 2n + (2n + 2) + (2n + 4) = 42 6n + 6 = 42 6n = 36 n = 6 So, the three numbers are 12, 14 and 16 4. Let the smallest odd number be 2b + 1 the consecutive odd number is 2b + 3 And the largest is 2b + 5 So, (2n + 1) + (2n + 3) + (2n + 5) = 81 6n + 9 = 81 6n = 72 n = 12 So, the three numbers are 25, 27 and 29
