Solve: a + 1/a = 2 (a + 1/a)3 = 8 a3 + 3(a + 1/a) + 1/a3 = 8 a3 + 3 × 2 + 1/a3 = 8 a3 + 1/a3 = 2 a + 1/a = 2 (a + 1/a)? = 32 a? + 1/a? + 5(a3 + 1/a3) + 10(a + 1/a) = 32 a? + 1/a? + 5 × 2 + 10 × 2 = 32 a? + 1/a? = 2 2. Solve: s = 1 - 1/3 + 1/8 - 1/15 + 1/24 - 1/35 + 1/48 - ... = 1 + [1/(2×4) + 1/(4×6) + 1/(6×8) + ...] - [1/(1×3) + 1/(3×5) + 1/(5×7) + ...] = 1 + (1/2 - 1/4 + 1/4 - 1/6 + ... )/2 - (1 - 1/3 + 1/3 - 1/5 + ...)/2 = 1 + 1/4 - 1/2 = 3/4 so 4s = 3.
