Assume water entering the tube comes from the surface. Hence, loss of potential energy of m kg of water on leaving the tube at the bottom of the dam = mg(100) J = 1000m J [where g, the acceleration due to gravity, is taken to be 10 m/s^2] Gain in kinetic energy of the m kg of water = (1/2)mv^2 where v is the speed of water leaving the tube By conservation of energy, 1000m = (1/2)mv^2 v^2 = 2000 (m/s)^2 i.e. v = 44.72 m/s
